Final Lesson Information
This is just to clarify the plan for Wednesday's lesson:
- Speaking tests: a Part 3 + Part 4 task (9 minutes) conducted in pairs outside the classroom
Remember that this test will only determine your speaking mark for the exam (forming 25% of your exam grade). Your overall speaking mark will be based on continuous assessment of your speaking in class (forming 10% of your total grade for the course)
- Final exam review: an opportunity to check the answers to the Listening, Reading and Use of English
- Writing error correction: self-explanatory, but you may wish to do this in pairs or small groups and discuss common errors and how to avoid them
- Course book listening/other exercises: we will do the last remaining listening task in Module 10 if time allows, and you may also wish to do some of the other exercises in this module (which you will find the answers to on the blog)
- Goal-setting: you are encouraged to reflect on your performance during the course, identify the areas most in need of improvement, and consider ways of working on these areas (as well as obviously acknowledge areas in which you have made good progress!)
To those of you who have NOT completed all writing tasks set during the course: Wednesday is your last chance to hand in writing! Bear in mind that your overall grade for the course will be affected if you have missed lots of homework tasks (since homework/coursework constitutes 20% of the assessment)
Any questions please get in touch!

Mock Exam Feedback and Recommendations
This week (on Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 February) you will receive your results for the mock CAE exam and I will be speaking to all of you individually about your progress on the course, your current situation and the best way to proceed.
In order to be recommended to sit the exam at CSIM in June, you will require a pass mark of 65% and a good result in all papers as a firm demonstration of your readiness. The pass mark in the real exam is 60%, so the 65% benchmark allows a 'margin of error', taking in account the possible effect of nerves on the day of the real exam.
In the case that you are recommended to sit the exam, you will be sent all the registration instructions and details of the exam by email. The registration period runs from 2 - 18 March.
If you are not recommended to sit the exam at CSIM in June, one possible alternative would be to register for the exam later in the year at the British Council, who run sessions year-round. Obviously you are free to take the exam anywhere and anytime you choose, but considering that the registration fee is around 190€, it would seem unwise to attempt the exam before you are fully prepared, confident and genuinely able to pass!
If you have any questions about this, please get in touch.

More Useful CAE/Advanced Exam Books!
You may wish to consider investing in some of these books for further grammar practice, vocabulary development, or to improve your writing, reading, listening or speaking skills. Bear in mind that many books are be based on the old exam, and may contain reference to tasks which no longer form part of the exam (such as the Use of English task in which you complete 3 sentences with the same word). Having said that, the majority of the content should still be relevant and useful.

More Exam Info
This is simply a note to confirm that the exam will NOT be based on the content of the course book. In other words, it will be an authentic past exam paper.

Preparing for the Writing exam
Considering that we have not yet done any timed writing in class, I would strongly recommend that you do a practice writing test at home before the February exam. Choose Test 1 or 2 from the exam practice book and allow yourself 90 minutes to complete both tasks. I'd be happy to check your writing and give you some feedback if you email it to me or hand it to me in the class before the exam. Remember to spend 5 minutes or so brainstorming ideas and devising a basic paragraph plan before you start writing!

Website for accessing English language TV
Admittedly this isn't directly related to the business of CAE exam preparation, but I thought you may be interested in a website which I've recommmended to another group for accessing English language TV programmes online, called Hola.org. It's free to sign up - all you need to do is click on 'Get Hola', add the Hola flame icon to your toolbar (or install Hola on your computer, which I've just been given the option to do), then click on the flame icon (or the icon on your desktop) to search for the channel you wish to access. In the case of BBC, once you enter the BBC website you should select 'IPlayer', which is the part of the site where you can watch many kinds of recently broadcasted BBC programmes.
Please give it a try and let me know if it works for you!

Exam Practice Books: 'Exam Essentials'
Here are some links to two exam practice books (each containing 8 complete practice tests; with CDs and answer keys included) which I would strongly advise you to purchase and make use of as a supplement to the course book and exam practice book which we use on the course. After all, when it comes to the CAE/Advanced exam, there's no such thing as too much practice! ;)

Course Feedback: Your teacher needs you!!
Happy New Year Everybody!
Following the Christmas break, I thought now would be a good time for me to get some feedback from you on the course so far.
What would you like to do more/less of (within the realms of possibility)? What do you think of the course book? Am I giving you enough homework?! What would you like to see on the blog? Above all, are you getting what you want/need out of the course so far? Do you feel that it is adequately preparing you for the CAE exam?
Please post a message on the blog or drop me an email with any comments or requests, the more specific the better! For example, a request for more practice of Speaking Part 3 would be more informative and helpful than simply asking for more speaking practice.
Much appreciated!
